shadow picture research archive
The online research portal was founded by Tim Otto Roth in 2001 comprising a growing link collection. Roth is one of the few leading specialists for the science and art historical research in shadow pictures. He holds a phd in art and science history. His cultural history on shadow pictures counts as the definitive book for shadowgraphs.

What makes Roth's approach so special is the fact, that he looks back also to a very succesful artistic career. He studied with Floris M. Neusüss at the art academy in Kassel and started at the end of the 1990s to extend the shadowgraphic medium using slide films, scanners and even video chips. In 2006 he chaired with Peter Weibel at the ZKM Karlruhe the first symposium focussing solely on shadowgraphs. Roth owns a growing collection of contemporary shadowgraphs, but also of historic publications. But he functions also as consultant for collectors and curated exhibitions and programs. In winter 2017 he was guest lecturer at Folkwang University in Essen. In 2018 he curated the show "Shadows on view?" dealing with shadow depictions in early modern engravings at the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne.
